What I Was Thinking When I Had Dinner at Tom and Daisy’s

For as long as I have known Daisy, I have never taken a liking to her husband, Tom. His arrogance should have humiliated him, but he was proud to be proud. He was spoiled because he had everything. He was a talented athlete, he had a trophy wife, and a dedicated mistress, not to mention all the money in the world. Daisy let him take advantage of her. She knew about the mistress, we all did, but she never did anything to stop it. She would rather be happy out of ignorance than face the truth, and who could blame her? The matter is terribly hush-hush, so if you don’t pay attention, you’ll never catch the truth. This is why I shushed Nick when the phone rang at dinner. All conversation stopped. A butler entered the dining area, fetching Tom to answer the penetrating ring. He rose confidently and strolled over to the phone. Daisy looked frantic and stressed, sat for a few seconds in silence before jumping out of her seat, chasing Tom into the hall.

Tom was also a raging racist. It wasn’t entirely unusual for wealthy men to have these views, but his principles were entirely unbelievable at this day and age. It’s embarrassing to be associated with such an outspoken racist. His opinionated ideologies only serve to make people feel uncomfortable. He even had the audacity to speak of these harmful views at dinner! He has no respect for anything. Not his marriage, and especially not people of color.
